The Tajik autonomous county of Tashkurgan sits at roughly 3,100 m above sea level on the Chinese side of the Pamir, three hours short of the Pakistan border. The drive in from Kashgar follows the G314 Karakoram Highway through the Ghez River canyon and past Karakul Lake, where the 7,546 m snow cone of Muztagh Ata reflects in turquoise water on a still morning. Tashkurgan itself is a working Tajik town with a 1,300-year-old Stone Fort ruin, high-altitude grasslands, and one of the most ethnically distinct populations in China.
