2-Day Wudang Mountain Kung Fu and Taoist Temples Tour
Wudang Shan is the birthplace of Taoist internal martial arts — tai chi, xingyi, bagua. The mountain has been a Taoist holy site since the Tang dynasty, and the Ming emperors poured imperial money into a temple complex that climbs the slopes from the entrance gate all the way up to the bronze-roofed Golden Hall at the 1,600m summit. UNESCO listed the complex in 1994. The mountain is also a living martial-arts academy: real Taoist priests still train and teach here, and you can watch demonstrations of forms that look slow until you notice the breathing.
This two-day private tour starts from Wuhan or directly at Wudang town (both options work; high-speed train Wuhan to Wudangshan station takes ~2 hours). Your English-speaking guide takes you through the key temple sites — the lower Purple Cloud Palace (Zixiao Gong), the South Cliff temple clinging to a vertical drop, and the summit Golden Hall — plus a live martial-arts demonstration at a working Taoist school. Overnight is on the mountain so you can do the summit at sunrise on Day 2 before the day-trip crowds arrive.
Day-by-day:
- Day 1 — 08:00 Pickup in Wuhan (or Wudangshan station meet at 11:00); drive to Wudang Shan park; visit Zixiao Gong (Purple Cloud Palace) the largest preserved Taoist palace; lunch of mountain vegetarian fare; afternoon South Cliff walk along the cliff-edge temple terrace; live Taoist martial-arts demonstration at a working school; overnight at a mountain-area hotel
- Day 2 — 06:30 Early ride up the cable car (or hike up steps for the keen); summit Golden Hall visit while the morning crowd is light; descend and visit the Tai Zi Po lower temple cluster; lunch; 14:00 transfer to Wudangshan station or drive back to Wuhan; 18:00 arrive Wuhan
Who this is for: Travelers interested in Chinese philosophy, martial arts, religious architecture, or any combination of those three. Photographers will love the cliffside temples. Comfortable for ages 8+; the cable car eliminates the steep climbs, but expect substantial stair-walking around the temple complex.
Logistics: Best April through November; winter operates but the summit can be icy. The Wudangshan high-speed station is on the Wuhan–Xi'an line — easy to chain with either city. Modest dress is appreciated at active temple sites (no tank tops or short shorts inside the halls). Bring layers — the summit is 10°C cooler than the entrance gate.

For us, there are plenty of polished photos online; the useful surprise was having time at Wudang Mountain Kung Fu and Taoist Temples without being moved along every five minutes.
Practically speaking, pickup and the trail start were timed well, so we were walking before the busiest part of the day. Water and rest stops were discussed clearly. I would keep the Wuhan outline as it was.
Expect uneven ground and a few sections where conversation stops because everyone is concentrating on their feet. The views near Wudang Mountain Kung Fu and Taoist Temples repay the effort.
Honestly, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around Wuhan felt specific to Wuhan, not interchangeable with another city.
