4-Day Mohe Northern Lights and Arctic Village Tour

Mohe is the only place in China where you can chase the aurora borealis. Tucked into the far north of Heilongjiang province against the Russian border, the town markets itself as China's northernmost settlement — and on clear winter or solstice nights, the sky here occasionally lights up with the same green ribbons people fly to Iceland for. Be honest with yourself: aurora is opportunistic, never guaranteed, and most visits won't see a strong show. But the landscape — frozen birch forests, the Heilongjiang river, and the silent border-village feel — is worth the trip even on a quiet sky night.

This four-day private tour starts in Mohe (reached by direct flight or sleeper train from Harbin) and works its way up to Beiji Village — the actual northernmost inhabited village in China, sitting right on the Heilongjiang/Amur river opposite Russian Siberia. Your English-speaking guide handles logistics: a heated 4WD vehicle, warm log-cabin lodging, multiple aurora-watch nights at dark-sky viewpoints north of the village, plus day activities (frozen-river walking, ice fishing in winter, white-night photography in late June around the solstice).

Day-by-day:

• Day 1 — 14:00 Pickup at Mohe airport or train station; drive north 1.5 hours to the village area; warm dinner in a local guesthouse; first aurora watch from a dark-sky viewpoint outside the village (22:00–01:00 if skies clear)
• Day 2 — 10:00 Late breakfast; day walk on the frozen Heilongjiang river (winter) or birch-forest hike (summer); afternoon visit to the symbolic northernmost marker; second aurora watch attempt evening
• Day 3 — 10:00 Local ice-fishing experience or reindeer-farm visit; afternoon drive a forest road for landscape stops; warm hotpot dinner; third aurora attempt
• Day 4 — 09:00 Final morning walk along the river viewpoint; drive back to Mohe town; 13:00 Drop-off at airport or station for onward transport

Who this is for: Travelers willing to chase a rare phenomenon at the edge of China, in serious cold (winter -30°C is normal). Photographers, aurora hunters, and anyone curious about Sino-Russian frontier culture. Not for travelers who need guaranteed sightings or warm-weather comfort.

Logistics: Two main windows — deep winter (December–February, best aurora odds plus snow scenery) and the summer solstice (around June 21–22, white nights and rare summer aurora). Mohe has direct flights from Harbin and Beijing; sleeper trains take ~13 hours from Harbin. Bring extreme cold weather gear for winter (down to -40°C with wind chill): expedition parka, insulated boots, heated gloves. Aurora viewing is weather-dependent; we plan three attempts but cannot guarantee sightings.
