About This Tour
Bogda Peak (5,445m) is the glittering ice giant of the eastern Tian Shan, rising straight out of the deserts of Xinjiang above the famous Heavenly Lake (Tianchi). Circling its base is one of China's four classic 'expert-grade' treks — a serious, high-alpine loop reserved for genuinely fit and experienced hikers. Over five days you climb from the tourist shores of Heavenly Lake into a hidden world of three sapphire alpine lakes, flower meadows where the rare Tian Shan snow-lotus blooms, roaring glacial rivers and a high pass with the full triple summit of Bogda overhead. There are no villages, no roads and no rescue once you are on the circuit — just you, your guide, a pack-horse team and one of the most beautiful and demanding mountain landscapes in Central Asia. The trekking window is short, from June to September, when the snow has cleared from the passes. This is raw Silk Road mountain country, walked by Kazakh herders and few foreigners. Itinerary

Day 1: Urumqi to Heavenly Lake｜Gateway to Bogda
We depart Urumqi and drive east about 110km (2-2.5 hours) to the Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) scenic area at the foot of Bogda Peak. After entering the park and taking the shuttle up, we walk the lakeshore path to acclimatize and admire the classic postcard view — a deep blue glacial lake mirroring the snowfields of Bogda. This is the only crowded part of the entire trip. In the afternoon we leave the tourist zone behind, hiking a gentle 6km (2-3 hours) up the valley to our first camp at around 2,400m beside a clear stream, where the horse team is waiting. A relaxed first day to ease into the rhythm of mountain life. Overnight in tents. Meals: Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 2: Up to the Three Lakes｜Into the High Basin
A demanding climbing day of roughly 13km over 6-7 hours with about 900m of ascent. The trail leaves the forest and ascends steep alpine slopes into a hanging basin holding the famous Three Lakes (San Ge Hai Zi) beneath Bogda's glaciers. We pass meadows where, in season, the protected Tian Shan snow-lotus blooms among the rocks, and where Kazakh herders bring their flocks for summer grazing. The third and highest lake sits at around 3,400m, fed directly by glacial melt and ringed by moraine. We make camp on a flat bench above the water with the ice walls of Bogda filling the head of the valley. A cold, exposed but spectacular high camp. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 3: The Bogda Pass｜Beneath the Triple Summit
The crux of the circuit. We start before dawn for a tough crossing of roughly 12km over 7-8 hours, climbing moraine and old snow to the high pass at about 3,500m, the closest point to Bogda on the entire loop. From the col the mountain's three icy summits stand directly overhead, with glaciers tumbling toward us and a sea of Tian Shan ridges stretching to the horizon. The descent on the far side is steep and loose, dropping into a remote valley on the southern flank of the massif. We cross glacial streams (best done early before the melt rises) and make camp at around 2,900m in a wild, untouched valley. A long, serious day at altitude — the highlight of the trek. Day 4: Down the Glacial Valley｜Forests and Pastures
A long descending day of about 16km over 6-7 hours, losing roughly 1,000m as we follow the glacier-fed river out of the high country. The landscape softens from bare moraine into spruce forest and broad summer pastures where Kazakh families live in felt yurts; if our timing is right we may be invited in for milk tea and a glimpse of nomadic life. The walking is easier underfoot but the distance and repeated stream crossings keep it a full day. We make our final trail camp at around 1,900m near the valley mouth, swapping the cold of the high camps for a milder, sheltered last night under the stars. Day 5: Trek Out & Return to Urumqi｜Departure
A final easy morning walk of about 7km over 2-3 hours brings us to the roadhead, where we say goodbye to the horse team and our Kazakh crew. We transfer back to Urumqi (roughly 3-3.5 hours by road), arriving in the afternoon. There is time for a celebratory Xinjiang lunch — hand-pulled noodles and lamb skewers — and a chance to visit the lively Grand Bazaar before the trip concludes. Onward flights or Silk Road extensions to Kashgar or Kanas can be arranged. A fitting end to one of China's toughest and most rewarding mountain circuits. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch included.
