Itinerary
Chengdu Back Alley Hotpot Private Dining (Half-Day)
The ultimate experience for foodies visiting Chengdu — skip the touristy restaurants and dine in a local's home. Sichuan Hotpot has a 1,700-year history. Today it comes in three styles: the "Red Pot" (spicy with chili and Sichuan peppercorns), the "White Pot" (non-spicy broth) and the "Double Pot" (both). With your guide, you'll cook both styles and learn to cut and present dishes under the direction of a professional chef. The experience also includes a unique local market visit to taste and learn about the city's culinary culture. Intimate small-group format (under 9 people) ensures personal attention.

Traveler Reviews
Looking back, the food came quickly, but the tour did not. We had time to ask where each dish came from and how people in Chengdu usually order it. I would keep the Chengdu outline as it was.
The unglamorous part: the useful part in Chengdu was having someone explain how to order the same dishes later. I left with names in my phone, not just photos. For this itinerary, the number of stops was enough.
Before you go, come hungry in Chengdu and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller. For 4 hours around Chengdu, the pace felt about right.
The route made more sense once we were on it. Time at Chengdu set the pace, while the hotpot meal gave us a reason to slow down.
