At the Beimuping starting point a local mountain guide leads you onto gentle paths across the high meadows, an area lovingly nicknamed the "flower forest above the clouds." The scenery changes with the season: in May and June the slopes glow with blooming alpine rhododendrons, while July and August bring a carpet of colorful wildflowers. Above 3,300 meters the landscape opens into broad alpine grassland under big skies, and on clear days you can gaze toward the Daxuetang massif and the graceful Yaomei Peak of the Four Sisters Mountains, rising to 6,250 meters.
This is high-altitude terrain, so the pace is kept easy and unhurried, with plenty of stops to breathe, photograph the flowers and enjoy the views; there is no race to any summit and comfort and safety come first. The meadows are home to protected plants such as blue poppies and snow lotus, which are admired but never picked, and all litter is carried back out to keep this fragile place pristine.

One detail I remember: the guide let Balang Mountain Alpine Meadow Day speak for itself sometimes. Not every quiet moment needed another speech.
The unglamorous part: pickup, tickets and the order of stops were handled without fuss. That sounds ordinary, but it is exactly what you want on a full sightseeing day. I would rather keep the pause at Balang Mountain Alpine Meadow Day than add another stop.
One thing I learned: lunch landed later than I expected, so a small snack was useful. I was happier not cutting the time at Balang Mountain Alpine Meadow Day.
I liked this more a day later, when I looked back through my photos and realised how different Chengdu and Balang Mountain Alpine Meadow Day had felt.
