Guangzhou: Koi Village & Youlong Gorge Rafting Trip
Enjoy a lively yet relaxed private day trip from Guangzhou into the green countryside of Foshan's Gaoming district, full of color, culture and gentle outdoor fun. After a comfortable hotel pickup, your private car and English-speaking guide take you first to Sucun, a one-of-a-kind koi culture village.
The entire village is decorated with vibrant koi murals, and several ponds hold many varieties of these auspicious fish, which symbolize luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. You can stroll the colorful lanes, watch the koi up close and take wonderful photos, then walk up onto the West River dyke to feel the breeze or relax on the riverside sand. Your guide shares the local folklore and the meaning behind the lucky koi.
Next you drive about an hour to Youlong Gorge, where a free local lunch is included, featuring a regional roast-duck noodle specialty. After lunch you ride the sightseeing cart to the start of a 6.8-kilometer forest rafting run, a refreshing and gentle float through lush green canyon scenery. You then have free time to explore the gorge's waterfalls, cool forest air and crystal springs at your own pace.

Looking back, by dinner we were still comparing notes about Koi Village & Youlong Gorge Rafting. That is usually how I judge whether a tour was worth doing.
The unglamorous part: the private format mattered most between the main stops. No waiting for a coach to refill and no counting thirty people before moving on. I would rather keep the pause at Koi Village & Youlong Gorge Rafting than add another stop.
One thing I learned: traffic added time to the day, so comfortable shoes and a little patience helped. The visit itself did not feel shortened. I would still leave extra time for Koi Village & Youlong Gorge Rafting.
We booked because arranging Guangzhou ourselves looked fiddly. We came away remembering the conversations as much as the places.
In short, I would change my shoes, not the itinerary. For this itinerary, the number of stops was enough.
