Itinerary
Hangzhou: Deqing Water Town & Mogan Private Day Trip
Spend an unhurried, flavour-filled day exploring the hidden small town of Deqing near Hangzhou on this fully private tour, blending classic Jiangnan water-town charm, local food and nostalgic old streets. Your English-speaking guide and private vehicle pick you up at your hotel, and the whole day is yours to savour at a gentle pace.
The first stop is Xinshi Ancient Town, one of the seven great water towns of Jiangnan and once the largest river port on the Grand Canal. Here you enjoy local specialities such as Xinshi mutton noodles, Wang Fukang tea cakes and turtle stew in cosy old courtyard restaurants, and browse traditional craft shops selling gourd ware and painted tortoise-shell art.
Next you visit the old town district of Qianyuan, a place that feels frozen in the 1990s, with no glass towers or rushing traffic, only quiet, well-worn streets. You can step into the local history and heritage museums (free of charge), discover a remarkable collection of historic Chinese coins with interactive displays, and then stroll roughly two kilometres along the tranquil old riverside lanes lined with weathered timber houses.
In late afternoon you drive to Yucun village at the foot of Mogan Mountain, where a Republican-era street under plane trees recalls a vintage film set. Explore the landmark clock-tower bookshop, the old railway station, small artisan stalls and trendy cafes, feeding the white doves on the square as the sun goes down.
With easy walking, an included local lunch and a focus on food and heritage, this is a calm, authentic slice of small-town China for all ages. You return to your Hangzhou hotel in the evening.

Traveler Reviews
Looking back, I booked with two dishes in mind and left with a longer list. The food stops gave the route a clear sense of place rather than feeling like random snacks. For 11 hours around Hangzhou, the pace felt about right.
The unglamorous part: the Hangzhou stops were organised, but the food did not arrive like a rehearsed tasting menu. Each place kept its own character.
Before you go, come hungry in Hangzhou and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller.
