Itinerary
Hangzhou: West Lake Hills Wuyue Buddhist Carvings Day Trip
Step into Hangzhou's rich Wuyue cultural heritage on this comfortable private day trip, recently popularized by the hit drama 'Taiping Nian.' Your guide and private driver collect you from your hotel and lead you on a relaxed exploration of the tranquil southern West Lake hills, where exquisite tenth-century Buddhist art is hidden among the greenery.
You begin at the ancient Fantian Temple, home to a rare pair of stone dharani pillars (jingchuang) built in 965 by the Wuyue king Qian Hongchu, beautifully carved with lotus, dragons and bodhisattvas. From there you take a gentle stepped path up the hillside, passing Qiyun Temple to reach the famous Moon Rock (Yueyan), once one of Hangzhou's three great moon-viewing spots, where a natural opening in the cliff was said to frame the full moon's reflection in the pool below.
Your guide then leads you to the Shengguo Temple site, where a 10-meter Buddha triad carved in the Wuyue period stands among the largest stone images in Hangzhou, and to the Eighteen Arhat carvings near a cliff bearing calligraphy by Song emperor Gaozong. The day closes with views over the historic Bagua Tian terraced fields.
Reframed as a leisurely, story-rich cultural walk rather than a strenuous hike, this private tour keeps the pace gentle with plenty of time for the carvings, history and photos. A relaxed lunch is included and your guide brings the legends to life in English. Pet-friendly and fully private, it is ideal for travelers who love authentic China heritage, hidden art and quiet hillside scenery.

Traveler Reviews
Honestly, I had seen plenty of photos of West Lake. Being there was quieter and more absorbing than I expected, and I stopped checking my phone for a while. I would still leave extra time for West Lake.
This worked for us because we didn't have to solve transport between Hangzhou and West Lake. We could pay attention to the places, not the logistics. The time around West Lake was not the part I would cut.
A practical note: the busiest place on the route was genuinely busy. Starting earlier would be my only change. For 9 hours around Hangzhou, the pace felt about right.
In hindsight, we booked because arranging Hangzhou ourselves looked fiddly. We came away remembering the conversations as much as the places. My only advice is not to shorten the time at West Lake.
