I went in most excited about Mutianyu. Funny enough, the Great Wall is the part I kept talking about afterward.
What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at the Great Wall much more interesting. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Mutianyu.
Looking back, I carried more than I needed. Water, a light layer and a small power bank would have covered the whole day. The time around Mutianyu was not the part I would cut.
Looking back, I would book this again for the pacing, not because every stop was spectacular. The ordinary transitions made Beijing and Tianjin feel like a place rather than a set of postcards.
A full 9 hours, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose.
