Overview

A private two-day trek along the historic Hui-Kai stone trail, crossing the remote mountain town of Baiji and Zhejiang's highest rapeseed terraces between Anhui and Zhejiang.

About This Tour

Often called a 'mini Motuo' of the lower Yangtze, this private two-day trek follows the ancient Hui-Kai flagstone trail through deep, little-visited mountains on the Anhui-Zhejiang border. From Lingjiao you walk into the cloud-wrapped mountain town of Baiji, then cross a chain of pristine villages, bamboo forests, towering high-mountain terraces, thousand-year-old redwoods and seasonal flower meadows before descending into Zhejiang. The route ends at Xiashan village, completing a genuine cross-province traverse on stone paths laid by Huizhou travelers centuries ago. In March and April you may catch Zhejiang's highest-altitude rapeseed fields in bloom at Yanchi village. With a private English-speaking guide, private transport and a relaxed group size, this trip suits active travelers seeking authentic, rarely-seen rural China and a real sense of walking through living history. Accommodation in Baiji is simple and rustic, in keeping with the remote setting. Best in spring or autumn. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: March-April for high rapeseed blooms, or autumn for clear skies • Fitness level: moderate; ~11 km with ~850 m ascent on day 1, ~9 km easier walking on day 2 • Baiji accommodation is rustic and basic; please come prepared • Bring a packed lunch for day 1 and good hiking shoes • Trails cross remote terrain; mountain weather can change quickly

Day 1: Lingjiao to Baiji | Into the Cloud Town

Depart the city around 07:30 and drive about 3.5 hours to Lingjiao village in Xiuning County, Huangshan, Anhui. After organizing your gear and warming up, set out on an initially gentle stretch of the Hui-Kai ancient trail, walking quiet mountain paths and the historic flagstone road laid by past generations, measuring with your own feet the wisdom and hardship of the old merchants. Stop for a streamside picnic lunch around midday, sharing whatever treats everyone has brought. By around 17:00 you reach Baiji, a small town cradled by surrounding peaks, where you spend the night; there is time to stroll nearby and visit the old Baiji People's Commune. Today's trek is roughly 11 km with about 850 m of cumulative ascent, taking around 6 hours. In the evening enjoy an optional shared dinner and the deep quiet of the mountain village. Meals: L (packed), D (own/optional group). Overnight: rustic village guesthouse in Baiji township.

Day 2: Baiji to Xiashan | Cross-Province Traverse

After an early breakfast, set off promptly around 08:00, passing through bamboo groves and forest paths while admiring spectacular high-mountain terraces, thousand-year-old redwoods and endless flower meadows. By around 10:00 you reach Yanchi, a pristine natural village high in the Baiji ranges; in March and April this is home to Zhejiang's highest-altitude rapeseed fields. Continue through the unspoiled village of Xiangshan, then around midday reach Wangling, crossing the border between Anhui and Zhejiang, with Zhejiang's Chashan village just opposite. Descend to the valley and follow Phoenix Stream all the way to Xiashan village in Zhejiang, completing the Hui-Kai traverse. Today's walk is about 9 km with roughly 300 m of ascent and is comparatively easy. After lunch in Xiashan, drive back to the city, arriving in the evening; the return drive is long, so prepare snacks in advance. Meals: B (village), L (own/group in Xiashan).

Looking back, by dinner we were still comparing notes about the trail. That is usually how I judge whether a tour was worth doing. I would rather keep the pause at the trail than add another stop.

The unglamorous part: pickup and the trail start were timed well, so we were walking before the busiest part of the day. Water and rest stops were discussed clearly. I would keep the Hui outline as it was.

One thing I learned: the trail is more physical than the tidy itinerary makes it sound. Proper shoes helped, and I was glad we kept water handy. For 2 days around Hui, the pace felt about right.
