Looking back, I booked with two dishes in mind and left with a longer list. West Lake gave the route a clear sense of place rather than feeling like random snacks.
The unglamorous part: the Guilin and Hangzhou meeting point was simple to find, and the food stops came at a sensible pace. There was time to ask what we were eating rather than just moving to the next plate. My only advice is not to shorten the time at West Lake.
Before you go, come hungry in Guilin and Hangzhou and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller. With 13 hours to work with, the balance felt sensible.
I liked this more a day later, when I looked back through my photos and realised how different Guilin and Hangzhou and West Lake had felt.
