Lijiang: Naxi Home-Cooking Class & Local Market Tour with Tibet Milk Tea

An immersive food half-day in a real Naxi home. Meet your host, a Naxi grandmother and her granddaughter, at the Lijiang Zhongyi Wet Market. 30-minute market walk: pick fresh yak meat from the highland-cattle stall, choose 4 kinds of wild mountain mushrooms (matsutake in season), gather seasonal herbs, and select fresh yak yogurt. Then drive 10 mins to the family courtyard. Hands-on cooking session: hand-fold yak-meat dumplings with butter pleating technique, prepare the Naxi mountain-mushroom hot pot over a clay stove, and learn to butter-churn Tibet-style suyou cha (yak butter milk tea). Eat your creations together with the family. Recipes provided to take home.

Looking back, I expected the Lhasa and Lijiang cooking session to be mostly watching. We actually had time to handle the ingredients, ask basic questions and make mistakes without feeling rushed.

Hannah S.🇿🇦 South Africa★★★★☆2025-10

The unglamorous part: the Lhasa and Lijiang stops were organised, but the food did not arrive like a rehearsed tasting menu. Each place kept its own character.

Marta L.🇸🇬 Singapore★★★★★2025-03

Before you go, come hungry in Lhasa and Lijiang and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller.

I liked this more a day later, when I looked back through my photos and realised how different the cooking session and the hotpot meal had felt.
