About This Tour
While thousands flock to Yubeng on the southern side of Meili Snow Mountain, almost no one sees Kawagebo (6,740m) from the north. This challenging six-day trek follows ancient herders' paths from the Yunnan-Tibet borderlands toward the mountain's untouched northern base camp, a route with no commercial development, no cable cars and barely another foreign face. You hike through old-growth rhododendron and fir forest, cross high pastures dotted with Tibetan summer camps, and emerge beneath a wall of glaciers and unclimbed peaks, the sacred massif so revered that mountaineering on it is forbidden by law. Mornings can deliver the famous 'sunrise gold' (rishai jinshan) igniting the snow walls, while afternoons bring moody cloud and the silence of a true wilderness. This is a trip for fit, experienced hikers who want raw Himalaya without the crowds, guided by locals who know the moods of the holy mountain. Itinerary

Day 1: Shangri-La to Deqin｜Drive into the Meili Range
Your adventure begins in Shangri-La (Zhongdian, 3,200m). After meeting your guide we drive north on the Yunnan-Tibet Highway (G214), roughly 180km over 5-6 hours, climbing through deep Mekong gorges and over the Baimang Snow Mountain pass (4,292m), one of the great viewpoints of southwest China. We stop at the Dongzhulin Monastery and the white stupa overlook before descending toward Deqin county. If the weather cooperates, your first sight of the thirteen-peak Meili massif appears across the valley at the famous Feilai Temple viewpoint, glowing at sunset. Overnight in a comfortable Deqin guesthouse to begin gentle acclimatization. Meals: Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 2: Deqin to Trailhead｜Into the Northern Valleys
A short morning transfer (about 2 hours, 60km) on rough mountain roads takes us beyond the last village on the northern side of the range, into the borderland country toward Tibet. We shoulder day packs while mules carry the camping gear, and begin trekking — roughly 9km over 4-5 hours, ascending around 600m through dense fir and rhododendron forest alongside a glacial-melt stream. The trail is wild and lightly used, marked by Tibetan prayer flags and herders' shelters. We make our first high camp at about 3,700m in a forest clearing with views opening toward the snow peaks above. Your crew sets up tents while you settle in for a cold, star-filled night. Day 3: Forest Camp to High Pasture｜Above the Treeline
Today we climb out of the forest belt onto open alpine pasture, a demanding day of roughly 11km over 6-7 hours with about 800m of ascent. The trail switchbacks past summer yak camps where Tibetan herders still graze their animals, then crosses streams and moraine to a high meadow at around 4,200m. As the trees fall away the full northern wall of the Meili range reveals itself: ice cliffs, hanging glaciers and the pyramid of Kawagebo dominating the skyline. We make camp beneath the peaks; in clear weather the late light sets the glaciers ablaze. The air is thin here, so we keep the pace measured and the team monitors everyone for altitude symptoms. Day 4: North Base Camp & Glacier Viewpoint｜The High Point
The big day. We set out early, light and unburdened, for the trek's climax — a roughly 10km round trip over 6-7 hours toward the northern base area and a viewpoint around 4,700m, the highest point of the route. The trail crosses moraine and old glacial tongues to a ridge that opens onto a panorama few outsiders have ever seen: the back of the sacred massif, with Kawagebo, Mianzimu and a parade of unclimbed peaks ringing a vast glacier basin. We pause for tea, photographs and quiet at this holy place, then retrace our steps to the high pasture camp before the afternoon clouds roll in. A tough but unforgettable day at altitude. Day 5: Descend to Trailhead, Return to Deqin｜Back to Comfort
After a final dawn at altitude we begin the long descent, retracing the route down through pasture and forest — about 18km over 6-7 hours, dropping roughly 1,400m back to the roadhead. The body welcomes the thicker air and the legs the downhill, though steep, root-tangled sections demand care. We say farewell to the mules and crew at the trailhead and transfer back to Deqin (about 2 hours), where a hot shower and a proper bed await. Evening at leisure to celebrate the crossing over a Tibetan dinner. Overnight in a Deqin guesthouse. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner included.

Day 6: Deqin to Shangri-La｜Departure
On the final morning we make an early stop at the Feilai Temple viewpoint for one last chance at the legendary sunrise over the thirteen peaks of Meili — a fitting farewell to Kawagebo. We then drive south back over the Baimang Snow Mountain pass to Shangri-La, roughly 180km over 5-6 hours, with stops at Tibetan villages and the great bend of the Mekong along the way. Arrival in Shangri-La by mid to late afternoon, where the trip concludes; onward flights or extensions can be arranged. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch included.
