About This Tour
Northern Xinjiang is China's wild northwest at its most cinematic: turquoise glacial lakes ringed by Siberian larch, log-cabin Tuvan and Kazakh villages, the celebrated Duku Highway slicing through four seasons of Tianshan scenery, and the endless swan-filled marshes of Bayinbuluke. This nine-day grand loop strings together Kanas, Hemu, Wucaitan badlands, Sayram Lake and the Tianshan Grand Canyon into one of the most varied drives anywhere in Asia. Because foreign visitors cannot legally self-drive in China, this is a chauffeured/guided self-drive: you ride in a comfortable private 4x4 or SUV with a professional English-speaking driver-guide, free to stop, shoot and explore at your own rhythm while leaving the wheel, permits and border-zone paperwork to us. Parts of the route enter sensitive border areas requiring a border permit, which we arrange in advance. The region is highly seasonal, at its best from June through early October when the Duku Highway is open and the Kanas autumn gold peaks in late September. Ideal for photographers, families and nature lovers who want big landscapes without strenuous trekking. Private tour, priced per person. Day 1: Urumqi｜Arrival & Trip Briefing
Your driver-guide meets you at Urumqi Diwopu Airport (approx. 30 min, 20 km to the city) and transfers you to a comfortable downtown hotel. Urumqi sits at around 800 m on the northern Tianshan slopes and is the gateway to the whole loop. After check-in there is time to stroll the Grand Bazaar, sample hand-pulled laghman noodles and lamb kebabs, and adjust to local time (Xinjiang runs two hours behind official Beijing time in practice). Over dinner your guide walks you through the nine-day route, vehicle, border-permit paperwork and packing for variable mountain weather. No long driving today, so it is a relaxed start to acclimatise. Overnight in a 4-star Urumqi hotel. Meals: Dinner included.

Day 2: Urumqi to Burqin｜Across the Junggar Basin to the Irtysh
A big northbound driving day of roughly 600 km and 7-8 hours on good expressway, crossing the arid Junggar Basin and the edge of the Gurbantunggut desert as the landscape shifts from gravel flats to rolling steppe. We break the drive with photo stops and lunch en route. In the late afternoon we reach Burqin, a tidy riverside town on the Irtysh, China's only river flowing to the Arctic Ocean. Time permitting we visit the Wucaitan (Five-Colour Beach) badlands at golden hour, where wind-carved ridges glow red, ochre and green above the water. Burqin's night market is famous for grilled Irtysh fish. Overnight in a comfortable Burqin hotel (around 480 m). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.

Day 3: Burqin to Kanas｜Into the Lake of the Spirits
A scenic 180 km, roughly 3-4 hour drive climbs from Burqin into the southern Altai, where pine forest replaces steppe and the road follows the milky-blue Kanas River. After leaving the private vehicle at the visitor centre we transfer to park shuttle buses (border zone). The afternoon is for Kanas Lake itself, a 24 km glacial fjord said to hide a lake monster, framed by snow peaks. We hike the easy boardwalk to Guanyu Pavilion (Fish-Watching Platform) for the classic panorama, then visit the river bends of Wolong Bay, Moon Bay and Sleeping Dragon Bay. Day 4: Kanas to Hemu｜Tuvan Villages & Larch Forests
A short transfer of about 70 km, 2 hours, brings us to Hemu, a postcard log-cabin village of the Tuvan and Kazakh herders set in a valley of Siberian larch. We make the gentle climb (around 30-45 min on foot) to the Hemu viewing platform for the morning-mist panorama of smoke curling from wooden chimneys, especially magical in late-September gold. The rest of the day is unhurried: wander the village lanes, photograph grazing horses, optionally ride along the river, and meet a Tuvan family over butter tea. Roads here are narrow mountain lanes, so your driver-guide times departures to avoid crowds. Overnight in a Hemu village guesthouse (around 1,500 m). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.

Day 5: Hemu to Urumqi｜Return Across the Steppe
We retrace south out of the Altai and rejoin the expressway for the long return to Urumqi, roughly 650 km and 8 hours with regular comfort and photo stops across the wide Junggar steppe. Sunflower and wheat fields line parts of the route in summer. Lunch is taken at a roadside Kazakh restaurant. This is mostly a transit day to reposition for the southern Tianshan leg, so settle in, enjoy the rolling scenery and rest. We arrive in Urumqi in the evening and check back into a city hotel for a comfortable night and good Wi-Fi before the mountain days ahead. Overnight in a 4-star Urumqi hotel. Day 6: Urumqi to Dushanzi｜Gateway to the Duku Highway
A relaxed 250 km, roughly 3-3.5 hour drive west to Dushanzi, the northern trailhead of the legendary Duku (Dushanzi-Kuqa) Highway. En route we may stop at the Dushanzi Grand Canyon, a vivid red-rock gorge carved by snowmelt. We position here so the spectacular highway crossing can begin fresh and early the next morning, beating both traffic and afternoon cloud. Your guide confirms the Duku is open (it operates only mid-June to early October) and checks weather at the high passes. The evening is free to rest. Overnight in a comfortable Dushanzi/Kuytun-area hotel (around 470 m). Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 7: Duku Highway to Bayinbuluke｜One Day, Four Seasons
The signature drive: around 300 km and a full 7-8 hours of slow, stop-everywhere motoring along the Duku Highway, often called China's most beautiful road. In a single day the route climbs from arid foothills through alpine meadows, snow tunnels and the Tianshan's glaciated heart, crossing the Haxilegen Pass (around 3,400 m) before descending to grassland. Highlights include Kuerdening's spruce forests and the glacier overlooks. We exit onto the vast Bayinbuluke grassland, a high basin at about 2,500 m where the Kaidu River meanders in the famous Nine Bends and swans gather at sunset. Overnight in a Bayinbuluke-area hotel. Day 8: Bayinbuluke to Tianshan Grand Canyon｜Swan Lake & Sunset Bends
We spend the morning on the Bayinbuluke grassland, riding the park shuttle to Swan Lake, China's largest swan breeding ground, and to the Nine-Bend overlook of the Kaidu River, best at the low-angle light when the meanders mirror gold and pink. After lunch we drive roughly 280 km, about 5 hours, eastward and down through the southern Tianshan to the Tianshan Grand Canyon (Kuqa Grand Canyon) area, a maze of fire-red sandstone cliffs and slot canyons utterly different from the green north. A short canyon walk closes the day. Overnight in a comfortable Kuqa-area hotel (around 1,100 m). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch included.

Day 9: Kuqa to Urumqi｜Departure
After breakfast we make the final leg back toward Urumqi. Depending on flight times this is either a direct expressway drive of around 700 km (the long full day) or, more commonly, a short transfer to Kuqa airport for a domestic hop, which your guide will have advised on at booking. We help with check-in and see you off. For travellers staying on, we can arrange extensions to Turpan's Flaming Mountains and Karez wells or onward to Kashgar. This concludes your nine-day northern Xinjiang grand loop. Meals: Breakfast included.
