Looking back, a small thing I appreciated: the guide let the Forbidden City speak for itself sometimes. Not every quiet moment needed another speech.
The unglamorous part: the private format mattered most between the main stops. No waiting for a coach to refill and no counting thirty people before moving on. The time around Pingyao old town was not the part I would cut.
One thing I learned: I would bring snacks and one quiet activity for the drive. Once we reached the Forbidden City, nobody needed entertaining.
Not every minute was engineered into a “moment.” There was time for coffee, questions and simply watching Beijing and Pingyao go by.
