The part around the giant pandas was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. Shanghai and Chengdu was a good counterpoint.
What helped was simple: our guide read the pace well. We got the background when it helped, then space to explore instead of a running lecture. I would keep the Shanghai and Chengdu outline as it was.
Looking back, I would check the weather and dress in layers. We moved between the vehicle, open spaces and indoor sites often enough to notice the difference. I would rather keep the pause at the giant pandas than add another stop.
Looking back, I tend to switch off when tours become a stream of dates. Here, the stories around Shanghai and Chengdu gave me enough to hold on to without overloading the day.
In short, a full 8 hours, in the good sense. Wear comfortable shoes and leave the evening loose.
