About This Tour
This is the classic Qinghai-Gansu grand loop, run as a private tour for your group only with an English-speaking guide and private vehicle, threading together the greatest hits of northwest China across plateau, desert and Silk Road. Starting in Lanzhou on the Yellow River, you climb onto the Tibetan plateau to Qinghai Lake, China's largest saltwater lake, ringed in summer by golden rape blossom, then visit the surreal Chaka Salt Lake, a 'mirror of the sky' you cross by little train. Driving the empty highways of the Qaidam Basin past the multicoloured Emerald Lakes, you reach the oasis city of Dunhuang for two nights of Silk Road wonders: the singing sand dunes and Crescent Moon Spring, the frontier pass of Yangguan, and the UNESCO-listed Mogao Grottoes, the world's richest treasury of Buddhist cave art. The loop continues to the mighty Jiayuguan fort at the western end of the Great Wall and the 6-million-year-old Rainbow Danxia landforms of Zhangye before finishing in Xining. With comfortable driving days and gentle walking, it suits travelers who want iconic landscapes and deep history without strenuous hiking. Best from late May to October. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late May-Oct; July-Aug for Qinghai Lake rape blossom, autumn for clear desert skies • Fitness level: easy; mostly scenic driving with short walks at each site • Altitude: Qinghai Lake and Chaka sit around 3,000-3,200m; pace yourself and hydrate to ease mild altitude effects • Mogao Caves run a strict daily quota; booking earlier secures the standard ticket and more caves, otherwise an emergency ticket with fewer caves applies • Long desert-crossing day to Dunhuang (about 530km); carry water and snacks as roadside supplies are sparse • Bring sun protection, a headscarf and warm layers for cool plateau mornings; photography inside the Mogao caves is not permitted

Day 1: Arrival in Lanzhou
Make your own way to the designated hotel in Lanzhou, the Yellow River city often called the 'Manhattan of the Northwest' and the great transport hub of Gansu, and check in under your name. With free time you can stroll the riverbanks, ride the old waterwheels or sample Lanzhou's famous hand-pulled beef noodles. Your guide confirms the next day's departure time. Resting near 1,600m tonight gives a gentle introduction before you climb onto the plateau. Meals: not included. Overnight: hotel in Lanzhou.

Day 2: Lanzhou to Qinghai Lake
After breakfast you drive about 360km west, leaving the loess hills for the Tibetan plateau and arriving at Qinghai Lake, China's largest inland saltwater lake, shimmering like a jewel at 3,200m. In the afternoon you enjoy a complimentary ride along a dedicated cycling greenway on the lake's scenic south shore, with rape-flower fields, blue sky and water all around in summer, before visiting the Erlangjian scenic area for a close look at the vast lake. You overnight nearby, with the option to watch sunset over the water. Pace yourself, as some travelers feel mild altitude effects here. Meals: breakfast included; other meals self-arranged. Day 3: Qinghai Lake to Chaka Salt Lake to Delingha
Early risers can catch the quiet beauty of sunrise over Qinghai Lake before breakfast. You then drive about 340km to the Chaka Salt Lake, China's 'Mirror of the Sky,' where the salt flats reflect sky and clouds in a dreamlike sheen. A little sightseeing train carries you out into the lake to pose among the salt-crystal patterns. Continuing on, you pass the scenery of Gahai before reaching the Qaidam Basin oasis town of Delingha for the night. Bring a colourful outfit for the salt lake, and note the water is cold with hidden pits, so take care. Meals: breakfast included; other meals self-arranged. Day 4: Delingha to Emerald Lake to Dunhuang
After breakfast you set out across the Qaidam Basin toward Dunhuang, with endless Gobi desert and gravel plains underlining the vastness of the northwest. En route you stop at the Emerald Lakes, a former salt-mining area where varying mineral concentrations have created pools of brilliant colour that mirror snow peaks and sky on clear days. The long desert crossing (about 530km) leads over the Danjin mountains into Gansu and the Silk Road city of Dunhuang by evening, where you can explore the lively Shazhou Night Market and try local donkey-meat noodles. Carry water and snacks, as roadside supplies are scarce. Meals: breakfast included; pack lunch advised. Overnight: hotel in Dunhuang (2 nights, approx. 1,200m).

Day 5: Yangguan Pass & Singing Sand Dunes
A full day exploring Dunhuang. You first drive to Yangguan, the ancient frontier pass immortalised in classical poetry as the gateway west on the Silk Road; the museum and old caravan road bring its history to life. In the cooler late afternoon you visit the Mingsha (Singing Sand) Dunes and the famous Crescent Moon Spring, a clear oasis pool encircled by towering dunes. Here you can ride camels, sand-sled or climb the shifting sands, and in summer the dunes host a sunset open-air sing-along. Round trip to Yangguan is about 120km. Day 6: Mogao Grottoes & Drive to Jiayuguan
After breakfast you visit the UNESCO-listed Mogao Grottoes, one of China's four great Buddhist cave complexes and the world's richest surviving treasury of Buddhist art. You begin at the Digital Exhibition Center for an introductory film, then enter the cliff to tour the painted and sculpted caves with a specialist guide (standard tickets include eight caves). In the afternoon you drive about 360km to Jiayuguan, the desert and farmland scenery shifting as you go, with an evening option to wander the Great Tang food street. Caves are booked under strict quota, so early reservation is important. Meals: breakfast included; other meals self-arranged. Overnight: hotel in Jiayuguan (approx. 1,600m).

Day 7: Jiayuguan Fort & Zhangye Rainbow Danxia
After breakfast you visit the Jiayuguan Fort, the towering western end of the Ming Great Wall set beneath the Qilian Mountains, long known as the 'greatest pass under heaven' and a key Silk Road stronghold; from its ramparts you look out over the Gobi to distant snow peaks. In the afternoon you drive on past Jiuquan to Zhangye for the Rainbow Danxia, a 510-square-kilometre wonderland of striped, multicoloured sandstone hills formed over 6 million years and rated by National Geographic among China's finest Danxia landscapes. Several platforms catch the colours, which glow most vividly in late-afternoon light. Meals: breakfast included; other meals self-arranged. Overnight: hotel in Zhangye.

Day 8: Zhangye to Xining & Departure
On the final day you drive back across the Qilian range toward Xining, the scenery turning from Danxia hills to alpine grassland and, in season, the great rapeseed fields of the Menyuan corridor blazing yellow beneath snow peaks. With photo stops along the way, you reach Xining in the afternoon where the grand loop concludes. Your guide assists with transfers to Xining's airport or railway station; book onward flights and trains for the evening or stay an extra night to rest.
