Qinghai Grand Loop Self-Drive

The Qinghai Grand Loop is the most rewarding and hassle-free road trip on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau - all the otherworldly high-altitude scenery of Tibet but with no border permits required, which makes it one of nebulatrip's easiest plateau routes to book. The loop strings together China's largest saltwater lake, the immense blue Qinghai Lake; the dazzling 'mirror of the sky' Chaka Salt Lake; the jewel-toned Emerald Lakes of the Qaidam Basin; and the surreal red-and-ochre badlands along G315, nicknamed the 'Mars Highway' for its alien, Martian landscapes. Along the way you pass yak-and-sheep grasslands, snow ranges, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and Silk Road oasis towns, all at altitudes that are high but generally manageable. Because foreign visitors cannot legally self-drive in China, this runs as a chauffeured / guided self-drive convoy: your own private vehicle with a professional driver-guide, in a small escorted group with plateau support. It suits photographers, families and first-time plateau travelers wanting jaw-dropping color without the complexity of a Tibet permit. Best driven June to early October. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations.
