About This Tour

This private two-day expedition takes you off the tourist map into the wild karst country of Quzhou in western Zhejiang, home to Eastern China's most dramatic sinkhole and limestone cave system. With your English-speaking guide and a private vehicle, you leave the city behind for the village of Huiping, then descend into Baita Cave (White Pagoda Cave), a vast natural cathedral of stone where an underground river winds past glittering stalactites and three towering stone columns shaped like pagodas. Over two days you will rappel into the sinkhole on rope, learn outdoor rock-climbing on natural cliffs with top-rope protection, ride a 150-metre zipline, and complete a 500-metre cave traverse linking the sinkhole to the main cavern, much of it on multi-stage rope descents. The explored cave runs more than 6,000 metres, with a chamber of some 20,000 square metres. This is a genuine adventure trip for travellers who want real outdoor challenge, dramatic scenery and hands-on caving rather than a sightseeing stroll. Best from spring to autumn, when conditions inside the caves are stable. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Itinerary

Day 1: Quzhou | Baita Sinkhole & Liangtoudong Cliff Climbing

Depart in the morning by private vehicle and drive roughly four hours into the karst hills of Quzhou, stopping in Huiping village for lunch. After a short 15-minute walk you reach the platform at the bottom of Baita (White Pagoda) Sinkhole, Eastern China's largest, where your guide runs a full equipment and safety briefing. A warm-up hike leads into Liangtoudong, the region's premier natural climbing crag, where you try rope-protected rock climbing on real cliff faces with hands-on instruction in harness use and descent technique. You then begin exploring the cave system, learning the rope and rappelling skills you will use the next day. After a full day of adventure you settle into a simple village guesthouse for the night. Day 2: Baita Cave Traverse | Return to Hangzhou

After an early farmhouse breakfast you gear up at the sinkhole entrance, where the day opens with a 150-metre zipline as an appetiser. From around 09:00 you begin the main event: a 500-metre traverse from the open sinkhole through to Baita Cave, descending in stages on multi-pitch ropes under your instructor's protection. Inside, the cavern opens into a grand stone chamber where an underground river twists past stalactites and the three pagoda-shaped columns that give the cave its name; the explored passages run over 6,000 metres across some 20,000 square metres. Because the traverse takes several hours, lunch is a packed meal eaten inside the cave. In the early afternoon you emerge, change, and drive back toward Hangzhou, arriving in the evening.
