Itinerary
Shanghai: Nanxun Water Town & Tea Trail Private Day Trip
Discover authentic Jiangnan at your own pace on this private, no-rush day trip from Shanghai to the ancient water town of Nanxun and the gentle Lu Yu Tea Trail.
After a comfortable pickup from your Shanghai hotel in a private vehicle, you and your English-speaking guide head into the quiet countryside of Huzhou. You begin with a leisurely walk along the historic Lu Yu Tea Trail, named after China's legendary Sage of Tea. The path winds gently through fragrant bamboo groves and rolling tea fields, passing a hilltop pavilion with views over a spring-fed reservoir, the Jinling Thousand-Buddha Pagoda, and the peaceful Yunlin Temple. This is a calm, scenic stroll rather than a strenuous climb, with plenty of time to take photos and breathe the clean country air.
Next, your private car takes you to Nanxun Ancient Town, often called the most refined of the six great water towns of Jiangnan. As Huzhou's only national 5A-rated scenic area and a site on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, Nanxun blends elegant merchant mansions, tranquil canals, stone arch bridges, and quiet whitewashed lanes. With your guide, you wander the waterways, learn the stories of the wealthy silk families who built the town, and enjoy local snacks at your own rhythm.
A delicious local lunch is included. Throughout the day your private driver and guide handle all logistics, so you simply relax and soak in the timeless beauty of the Chinese water country before returning to your Shanghai hotel in the evening. Ideal for travelers who want genuine culture, gentle walking, and an unhurried, comfortable pace.

Traveler Reviews
The food came quickly, but the tour did not. We had time to ask where each dish came from and how people in Shanghai usually order it. With 12 hours to work with, the balance felt sensible.
What helped was simple: the Shanghai stops were organised, but the food did not arrive like a rehearsed tasting menu. Each place kept its own character.
Looking back, my legs noticed the climbs the next morning. I would still do the same route, just with lighter shoes and fewer things in my daypack. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Nanxun Water Town & Tea Trail Day.
Looking back, I had a long list of things I thought I needed to see. After Shanghai, I was happier slowing down and noticing fewer things properly. I would keep the Shanghai outline as it was.
