Itinerary
Shanghai: Shaoxing Tea Hills & Quiet Ancient Trail Day Trip
Swap Shanghai's pace for the peaceful tea hills of Shaoxing on this wonderfully relaxed private day tour, specially suited to beginners and anyone who wants gentle strolling rather than a workout. Your English-speaking guide and private driver collect you from your hotel for an easy drive into the green folds of the Kuaiji Mountains.
The village here sits cradled on three sides by hills, wrapped in the scent of tea and curls of woodsmoke from old farmhouses. You'll set off on a short, well-made loop of around five kilometers, climbing gently through fragrant tea terraces and shady bamboo to a viewing platform where the whole sweep of tea-covered slopes opens out before you. The path follows a quiet, time-worn old trail that feels a world away from the city, and the low-effort route means you can simply enjoy the birdsong, the views and the fresh mountain air.
Back in the village there's plenty to discover at your leisure: a charming little waterfall feature, a brand-new reading house, a 1,500-year-old ginkgo tree standing guard at the village entrance, and an atmospheric Ming and Qing-era mansion now turned into a teahouse, the perfect spot to slow right down with a cup of local tea.
A relaxed lunch is included, and because the tour is private the day is entirely yours to shape, more time in the teahouse, a slower stroll, or extra photo stops are all easy before your car returns you to Shanghai.

Traveler Reviews
One detail from the day: this was less about eating a huge meal than paying attention to several small ones. That rhythm worked for 9 hours.
Translation mattered as much as the cooking in Shanghai. We could ask the host ordinary questions instead of relying on a rehearsed demonstration. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Shaoxing Tea Hills & Quiet Ancient Trail Day.
A practical note: this is not technical hiking, but it isn't a city stroll either. Starting early gave us a cooler, quieter stretch on the trail. For this itinerary, the number of stops was enough.
In hindsight, the route made more sense once we were on it. Time at Shanghai set the pace, while Shaoxing Tea Hills & Quiet Ancient Trail Day gave us a reason to slow down.
I booked mainly for Shaoxing Tea Hills & Quiet Ancient Trail Day. I was glad I did because of Shanghai.
