Spend an easy, photogenic day around Xianghu Lake near Hangzhou, blending early-summer flowers with the joy of fruit picking. Your private car and English-speaking guide collect you from your Shanghai hotel for a comfortable drive into the Zhejiang countryside.
Your first stop is the Xianghu flower fields, where ribbons of cosmos blooms in pink, white and purple sway across the meadows against clear lake water and open sky, a dreamy, relaxed spot to stroll and take photos at your own pace. Nearby at Dingshan Square the water lilies are at their best, floating serenely on the still lake, with a light fragrance drifting on the breeze. Looking back, by dinner we were still comparing notes about Xianghu Flowers & Bayberry Day. That is usually how I judge whether a tour was worth doing.
The unglamorous part: the private format mattered most between the main stops. No waiting for a coach to refill and no counting thirty people before moving on. I would keep the Shanghai, Xi'an and Hangzhou outline as it was.
One thing I learned: traffic added time to the day, so comfortable shoes and a little patience helped. The visit itself did not feel shortened. With 11 hours to work with, the balance felt sensible.
The route made more sense once we were on it. Time at Shanghai, Xi'an and Hangzhou set the pace, while Xianghu Flowers & Bayberry Day gave us a reason to slow down.
