Traveler Reviews
The part around the Yungang Grottoes was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. Pingyao old town was a good counterpoint.
What helped was simple: pickup and the trail start were timed well, so we were walking before the busiest part of the day. Water and rest stops were discussed clearly. I would still leave extra time for Pingyao old town.
Looking back, my legs noticed the climbs the next morning. I would still do the same route, just with lighter shoes and fewer things in my daypack. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Pingyao old town.
Looking back, I tend to switch off when tours become a stream of dates. Here, the stories around Pingyao old town gave me enough to hold on to without overloading the day.
