The part around Hong Kong MacLehose & Long Ke Beach was unhurried, which mattered more to me than squeezing in one more stop. Hong Kong and Shenzhen was a good counterpoint.
What helped was simple: there was no pressure to turn every pause into a photo stop. We could catch our breath, look around and move when ready. For 11 hours around Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the pace felt about right.
Looking back, my legs noticed the climbs the next morning. I would still do the same route, just with lighter shoes and fewer things in my daypack. My only advice is not to shorten the time at Hong Kong MacLehose & Long Ke Beach.
Looking back, this wasn't a “see everything” tour, and that was a strength. The time around Hong Kong and Shenzhen felt specific to Hong Kong and Shenzhen, not interchangeable with another city.
