Taishan: Diaolou Village & Fortune Hill Private Day Trip

Discover the watchtower villages and gentle scenery of Taishan on this easygoing private day tour from Guangzhou. With hotel pickup, a private vehicle and your own English-speaking guide, the day is relaxed, photogenic and authentic.

Your first stop is Fuyue Village, famous for its diaolou - the unique fortified watchtowers that blend Chinese and Western architecture and are part of a UNESCO-listed heritage tradition. Stroll among broad rice fields where the elegant old towers rise above the countryside, creating a wonderfully pastoral, picture-perfect scene. Your guide shares the history of these emigrant-built landmarks while you take your time photographing them.

At midday, enjoy a relaxed local lunch featuring Taishan's signature eel rice, a beloved regional specialty.

In the afternoon, drive to Gudou Fortune Hill for a gentle walk up well-maintained paths. There is no rush and no strenuous climbing - just an easy, scenic ascent. From the Fortune Square at the top you can make a wish for good luck, look out over the emerald waters of Dongfanghong Reservoir on one side, and catch sea views on the other. The combination of mountain, lake and sea makes for memorable panoramas.

The pace stays comfortable throughout, focusing on heritage, scenery and good food rather than intensive hiking. After a full and easy day, you are driven back to your hotel in Guangzhou. Stops can be adjusted to your interests.

My camera roll says the photography stops was the big moment. My actual favourite was Guangzhou; it felt less obvious and more personal.

What helped was simple: our questions wandered well beyond the standard facts, and the guide stayed with them. That made the time at Guangzhou much more interesting. I would rather keep the pause at the photography stops than add another stop.

Looking back, I carried more than I needed. Water, a light layer and a small power bank would have covered the whole day. For 13 hours around Guangzhou, the pace felt about right.

Stefan X.🇵🇹 Portugal★★★★★2024-09

Looking back, this felt like travelling with someone who knew the area, not following a person holding a flag. That difference showed most at Guangzhou. The time around the photography stops was not the part I would cut.

Elena W.🇩🇪 Germany★★★★☆2024-04

In short, worth doing for the photography stops; worth remembering for the small stops in between.
