Tianmu Mountain Ancient Forest Private Day Trip
Step into a magnificent ancient forest on this relaxed private day tour from Shanghai to West Tianmu Mountain, often called the 'Kingdom of Giant Trees' and the Jiangnan region's answer to Japan's Kumano Kodo. With hotel pickup, a private vehicle and your own English-speaking guide, it is a peaceful day in nature without the intensity of a serious hike.
After a comfortable drive into the mountains, follow your guide along a scenic forest trail at an easy, unhurried pace. The primeval woodland is lush and atmospheric, with layered green peaks, curious rock formations and the sound of flowing streams. Countless towering trees over 30 meters tall line the path, and near the top you can marvel at famous giants like the 'King Tree' and the 'Sky-Soaring Tree.' In autumn, an ancient ginkgo known as the 'ancestor of ginkgoes' adds golden color to the scene.
You will pause at a quiet clearing to rest and take in the serene surroundings. From the upper area you can ride the sightseeing shuttle (small fee, payable locally) down to Chanyuan Temple, a tranquil mountain monastery where you can visit, take photos, and even pause for tea or coffee.
The focus all day is on gentle forest walking, fresh air and natural beauty rather than strenuous climbing, making it ideal for travelers who love nature at a comfortable pace. A relaxed lunch is included. After a refreshing day among the giant trees, you are driven back to your hotel in Shanghai.
Note: pace and route can be adjusted to your fitness and interests; comfortable shoes are recommended.

Traveler Reviews
For us, there are plenty of polished photos online; the useful surprise was having time at Tianmu Mountain Ancient Forest Day without being moved along every five minutes.
Practically speaking, pickup and the trail start were timed well, so we were walking before the busiest part of the day. Water and rest stops were discussed clearly. I would keep the Shanghai outline as it was.
Expect uneven ground and a few sections where conversation stops because everyone is concentrating on their feet. The views near Tianmu Mountain Ancient Forest Day repay the effort.
