About This Tour
The West Sichuan Grand Loop is the ultimate road trip on the eastern Tibetan Plateau (Kham), gathering the region's most legendary sights into one circuit out of Chengdu. You take in Seda (Larung Gar), the breathtaking sea of crimson monastic dwellings that is the largest Tibetan Buddhist institute in the world; Daocheng Yading, the 'last Shangri-La,' with its three holy snow peaks - Chenrezig, Jambeyang and Chanadorje - and turquoise alpine lakes; the painters' paradise of Xinduqiao; and grand passes, grasslands and monasteries in between. The scenery is world-class and the culture deeply Tibetan, but the altitudes are serious, with several passes above 4,500 m and overnights as high as 4,000 m. Because foreign visitors cannot legally self-drive in China, this runs as a chauffeured / guided self-drive convoy: your own private 4WD with a professional driver-guide, in a small escorted group carrying oxygen and plateau support. It suits adventurous travelers comfortable with altitude who want raw Kham scenery. Best driven May-June and September-October. Some areas are sensitive, so foreigner access is reconfirmed before each departure. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and border-area regulations. Day 1: Chengdu｜Arrival & convoy briefing
Arrive in Chengdu (500 m), Sichuan's relaxed capital of pandas, teahouses and spicy cuisine, and the launch point of the loop. Your driver-guide hosts a full convoy briefing covering vehicle handover, route, passport check, and altitude and oxygen orientation for the high days ahead. Free time to visit the Giant Panda Breeding Base, wander People's Park or the Wenshu Monastery lanes, and stock up on snacks, warm layers and any last gear before leaving the lowlands. Tonight you stay in a comfortable 4-star city hotel, the last full-service night before the plateau. Driving today is minimal; focus on rest and acclimatization prep. Meals: Dinner included as a welcome group meal.

Day 2: Chengdu to Seda (Larung Gar)｜The red monastic city
A long, climbing 400 km, 8-9 hour driving day onto the Kham plateau. The convoy heads northwest via Wenchuan and Maerkang, ascending river gorges and grassland before reaching Seda (3,900 m). The day's awe-inspiring climax is Larung Gar, where tens of thousands of crimson monastic cabins blanket an entire valley around the Buddhist academy - one of the most extraordinary sights in the Tibetan world, best seen glowing red at dusk. The high overnight demands care: arrive, move slowly, hydrate and use oxygen if needed. Roads are paved but long with sustained altitude gain. Overnight in a simple but comfortable hotel near Seda. Day 3: Seda to Ganzi｜Monasteries & grassland
About 230 km and 5-6 hours of classic plateau driving. After a morning at Seda - perhaps the Sky Burial platform area with your guide's cultural explanation - the convoy crosses rolling Kham grassland grazed by yaks and dotted with nomad tents, descending gradually to Ganzi (3,400 m), a major Tibetan town in a broad fertile valley. The lower elevation aids recovery after Seda. Highlights can include the gilded Ganzi Monastery with views over the valley and the snow ranges beyond. Roads are paved but winding with several minor passes. Overnight in a comfortable Tibetan-style hotel in Ganzi. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 4: Ganzi to Daocheng｜Toward the last Shangri-La
Roughly 330 km and 7-8 hours of beautiful, high driving south toward Yading. The convoy passes through Xinlong's forested gorges or the Litang grasslands, crossing high passes around 4,500 m with sweeping plateau panoramas, the holy town of Litang (4,014 m) and the vast Haizi Shan stone wilderness. You reach Daocheng (3,750 m), the base town for the Yading reserve. Expect big altitude swings, so the convoy paces stops carefully and keeps oxygen handy. Scenery alternates between snow ranges, alpine lakes and Tibetan villages with painted homes. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Daocheng. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 5: Daocheng to Yading｜Three holy snow peaks
A short transfer drive of around 80 km and 2-3 hours to the Yading Nature Reserve, then a day exploring on foot and by the reserve's eco-buses (private driving is not permitted inside). Yading, the 'last Shangri-La,' centers on three sacred snow peaks - Chenrezig (6,032 m), Jambeyang and Chanadorje - rising above pristine valleys. Highlights include Chonggu Monastery, the alpine Pearl Lake and, for the fit, the higher Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake at around 4,500-4,600 m. Go slowly at this altitude. You overnight in Yading village (around 3,900 m) or back in Daocheng, positioned for the peaks. Roads/access are managed by the reserve. Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included.

Day 6: Daocheng to Litang to Xinduqiao｜Plateau classics
A scenic 360 km, 7-8 hour driving day turning the loop back toward Chengdu. The convoy retraces the high country to Litang, then follows the classic G318/G227 corridor over major passes such as Tuer Shan and Gaoersi (around 4,400 m), with endless grassland, yak herds and snow horizons. The day ends at Xinduqiao (3,300 m), the famed 'photographers' paradise' of golden poplars, meandering streams and Tibetan farmhouses bathed in soft mountain light - magical at sunset. The gradual descent to 3,300 m aids recovery. Roads are paved but high and winding. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Xinduqiao. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 7: Xinduqiao to Kangding to Chengdu plain｜Coming down
Roughly 320 km and 7-8 hours as the convoy crosses the last big pass, Zheduo Shan (4,298 m), and descends steeply to Kangding (2,560 m), the historic Han-Tibetan gateway town in its tight river gorge. From here the road keeps dropping through the Erlang Shan tunnel and Ya'an back toward the green Sichuan basin, with the thicker, warmer air a welcome change after a week on the plateau. You overnight either in Ya'an or back in Chengdu depending on timing and road conditions. Roads are paved with long mountain descents handled carefully by your driver-guide. Day 8: Chengdu｜Loop completed & departure
Minimal driving today as the West Sichuan Grand Loop comes to a close back in Chengdu. Depending on your departure time there may be space for a final highlight - the panda base if not yet visited, a teahouse and hotpot farewell, or souvenir shopping in the old streets. Your driver-guide then transfers you to Chengdu airport or railway station for onward travel, where the convoy adventure concludes. Chengdu's excellent flight and high-speed rail links make onward travel to Xi'an, Chongqing, Lijiang or beyond simple to arrange. Meals: Breakfast included.
