Overview

A demanding private 3-day ridge traverse across Wugongshan's vast golden alpine grasslands and seas of cloud, linking the Golden Summit, Fayunjie and the granite spires of Yangshimu to Mingyue Mountain.

About This Tour

Wugongshan in Jiangxi is one of China's most iconic trekking destinations, prized by hikers for its endless high-altitude grasslands rolling over wave-like ridgelines, sunrises above a sea of clouds and crowd-free, pristine scenery. This private 3-day grand traverse follows the classic 'Shen-to-Ming' route from Wugongshan across to Mingyue Mountain: climbing through Tieti Peak to the Golden Summit on day one, then walking the signature ridgeline grasslands to Fayunjie and Shenjia Courtyard, before crossing the granite peak-forest of Yangshimu and descending via Mingyue Mountain on the final day. It is a genuine multi-day mountain trek with long daily distances, big ascents and basic mountain-guesthouse lodging, rewarding fit, experienced walkers with some of the finest alpine ridge-walking in eastern China. Best hiked in late spring, summer and autumn (golden grass and clear cloud seas); the mountain can be cold, wet and windy. Itinerary may adjust based on weather, road and local regulations. Good to know: • Best season: late spring to autumn for golden grasslands and seas of cloud; the mountain is cold, windy and can be wet year-round • Fitness level: CHALLENGING – three long days of ridge walking (~16–17 km/day, 6–8 hrs), ascent from ~500 m up to 1,918 m; only for fit, experienced trekkers • Carry your own pack (porters available on request); supply points on the ridge are sparse, so bring enough water and snacks • Mountain guesthouses are basic, with bunk beds, shared bathrooms and limited/scheduled electricity – bring a power bank and head torch • Arrive in Pingxiang the night before for the early Day 1 start; the trek finishes in Yichun

Itinerary

Day 1: Pingxiang → Shenzi Village → Tieti Peak → Golden Summit → Diaomazhuang | ~16 km

Meet at Pingxiang Railway Station (or Pingxiang North Station) and transfer about 60 km (1.5 hrs) to the trailhead at quiet Shenzi Village. After a warm-up, begin the climb (~16 km, 6–8 hrs, ascent ~500 m to ~1,846 m). The trail passes a few seasonal supply huts before reaching Tieti (Iron Hoof) Peak at 1,846 m, a granite crag standing above a sea of cloud, where the view opens onto Wugongshan's vast alpine grasslands. From here the spectacular ridgeline grassland leads roughly 2.5 hrs to the Golden Summit, before descending to tonight's guesthouse at Diaomazhuang to settle in and watch the sunset over the mountains; clear nights offer superb stargazing. Meals: breakfast on own / packed trail lunch / group dinner at the guesthouse. Accommodation: Diaomazhuang mountain guesthouse, 4-bed bunk dorm, shared bathroom.

Day 2: Diaomazhuang → Guanyindang → Qianzhang Cliff → Fayunjie → Shenjia Courtyard | ~17 km

Wake before dawn (around 06:00) for sunrise over the sea of clouds, one of the trek's great highlights, watched from the slope opposite the guesthouse. After breakfast, set off on today's signature section across more than 10 km of high alpine grassland from the Golden Summit toward Fayunjie – glorious ridge-and-grassland walking that is also the most demanding stretch on legs and lungs. Reach the broad grassland plateau of Fayunjie around 14:00, a fine spot for photography, then continue toward Shenjia Courtyard, arriving about 18:00 to settle in and dine (pay-as-you-go) at the guesthouse. The second half, from Fayunjie to Shenjia Courtyard, passes through denser forest with rougher trail. In late autumn, daylight is short and part of the descent may be in the dark – carry a head torch. Total ~17 km along the ridgeline. Meals: guesthouse breakfast / trail or guesthouse lunch / group dinner. Accommodation: mountain guesthouse, basic, limited electricity.

Day 3: Shenjia Courtyard → Yangshimu Granite Peaks → Mini-train → Mingyue Mountain → Yichun | ~16 km

Rise around 07:00 and after breakfast set off for Yangshimu. The trail from Fayunjie to Yangshimu runs through wooded terrain, with some scrambling sections requiring hands and feet. Unlike Wugongshan's grasslands, the Yangshimu scenic area is a dramatic granite peak-forest of fantastical spires, famed for its strange rocks, flying waterfalls, seas of cloud and, in cold months, rime ice and snow. Around 11:30 reach the Yangshimu mini-train and ride it toward Mingyue Mountain; by about 13:30 reach the summit and take the cable car down. Reach the foot of the mountain around 15:00 and transfer the short ~40 km (1 hr) to Yichun Railway Station for onward travel; book a return train after 15:00. Total trekking ~16 km, with sparse supply points – carry enough water. Meals: guesthouse breakfast / trail or guesthouse lunch. Accommodation: not included (return day).

Honestly, I had seen plenty of photos of the trail. Being there was quieter and more absorbing than I expected, and I stopped checking my phone for a while. I would keep the Wugongshan Grand Traverse 3 outline as it was.

The guide checked the pace before the steeper section rather than after someone fell behind. That made the trail feel supportive without becoming fussy. The time around the trail was not the part I would cut.

A practical note: this is not technical hiking, but it isn't a city stroll either. Starting early gave us a cooler, quieter stretch on the trail. For 3 days around Wugongshan Grand Traverse 3, the pace felt about right.

In hindsight, the best compliment I can give is that I never checked how many stops were left. The trail arrived at just the right point in the route. I would rather keep the pause at the trail than add another stop.

Honestly, I booked mainly for the trail. I was glad I did because of Wugongshan Grand Traverse 3.
