Looking back, there was enough explanation to follow the recipe, but not so much that the cooking lost its rhythm. The Yangshuo countryside in Guilin felt hands-on from the start.
The unglamorous part: translation mattered as much as the cooking in Guilin. We could ask the host ordinary questions instead of relying on a rehearsed demonstration.
Before you go, come hungry in Guilin and say clearly what you cannot eat. There was enough variety that skipping one item did not make the experience feel smaller.
