The Yunnan-Tibet Highway is the most culturally rewarding and altitude-friendly way to overland into Tibet. Beginning in the romantic old town of Lijiang and climbing gradually through Shangri-La, the route lets your body acclimatize slowly rather than jumping straight onto the high plateau, making it the recommended entry road for first-time Tibet travelers. Along the way you pass the Tiger Leaping Gorge canyon, the Tibetan monastery town of Shangri-La, the holy Meili (Kawagebo) Snow Mountain with its dawn 'golden mountain' light, the dramatic Lancang (Mekong) and Nu (Salween) river gorges, and finally the turquoise lakes and snow peaks that lead to Lhasa. Because foreigners cannot legally drive themselves in China, and Tibet requires a permit plus an accompanying guide, this runs as a chauffeured / guided self-drive convoy: your own private 4WD with a professional driver-guide, traveling in a small escorted group with full plateau support and oxygen on board. It suits travelers who want Himalayan scenery alongside Naxi and Tibetan culture, at a moderate, well-paced rhythm. Best driven late April-June and September-October. Day 1: Lijiang｜Arrival & convoy briefing
Arrive in Lijiang (2,400 m), the UNESCO-listed old town of cobbled lanes, canals and Naxi culture beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Your driver-guide hosts a full convoy briefing covering vehicle handover, Tibet permit and passport checks, altitude and oxygen orientation, and the route ahead. The mild altitude here begins your acclimatization gently. Spend free time wandering the lantern-lit old town, Black Dragon Pool with its mountain reflections, or a quiet teahouse, and pick up snacks and warm layers. Tonight you stay in a charming boutique hotel in or near the old town - the most comfortable base of the trip. Driving today is minimal. Meals: Dinner included as a welcome group meal.

Day 2: Lijiang to Shangri-La｜Tiger Leaping Gorge
Around 180 km and 4-5 hours of scenic driving northward. The convoy follows the Jinsha River to the First Bend of the Yangtze, then to a viewpoint over the mighty Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world's deepest canyons, where the river roars between 3,000 m cliffs. Continuing uphill the landscape shifts from farmland to Tibetan plateau as you reach Shangri-La (Gyalthang, 3,300 m). Visit the photogenic Songzanlin Monastery, often called 'little Potala,' and stroll the rebuilt Tibetan old town. The gradual climb today is key to acclimatizing; take it easy and hydrate. Day 3: Shangri-La to Deqin｜Meili Snow Mountain
About 185 km and 5-6 hours through ever-grander terrain. Leaving Shangri-La the road crosses Baima Snow Mountain Pass (around 4,290 m) with sweeping alpine views, then descends toward Deqin (3,400 m). The day's climax is the Feilai Si viewing platform facing Meili (Kawagebo, 6,740 m), Yunnan's holiest peak and a sacred pilgrimage mountain that has never been summited. If skies cooperate at dawn or dusk, you may witness the famed 'sunlight on the golden mountain.' The drive is paved but winding with big elevation swings. Overnight in a comfortable hotel near Feilai Si positioned for the mountain view. Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included.

Day 4: Deqin to Markam｜Crossing into Tibet
Roughly 110 km and 4-5 hours, short in distance but big in significance as you cross from Yunnan into the Tibet Autonomous Region. The road drops to the Lancang (Mekong) River, passes the terraced vineyards and salt fields of the Yanjing area - a unique Tibetan-Catholic-Naxi cultural pocket - then climbs to Markam (3,780 m), where you join the G318 corridor. Your guide handles the first Tibet permit checkpoints. Scenery is a mix of deep river gorge, ancient salt pans and Tibetan villages. The lighter driving day eases the transition onto the plateau. Day 5: Markam to Zuogong｜Passes & the 72 bends
An exciting 160 km, 5-6 hour drive over high passes shared with the classic G318 route. The convoy climbs Dongda Shan (5,008 m), among the trip's highest points, then descends the legendary Nujiang '72 bends,' a spectacular switchback staircase carved above the Nu (Salween) River gorge - a must-stop for photos. After crossing the river you climb once more toward Zuogong (3,780 m). Driving is technical with steep grades and tight curves, so your driver-guide proceeds carefully while you enjoy the scenery. Altitude swings are large; move slowly and use oxygen if you feel it. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Zuogong. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 6: Zuogong to Ranwu｜Glacial lakes
About 290 km and 7-8 hours of varied driving. The convoy crosses Yela Shan, traverses Bangda's vast grassland and the town of Baxoi, then descends into greener, forested valleys toward Ranwu. The highlight is Ranwu Lake (3,850 m), a glacier-fed lake of milky turquoise ringed by snow peaks, with the dramatic Laigu Glacier nearby - one of the scenic peaks of the whole journey. Roads are mostly paved with some rough sections. You overnight at a lakeside guesthouse with beautiful water-and-mountain views; an optional short shoreline walk is lovely at golden hour. Day 7: Ranwu to Bomi to Nyingchi｜Forests & lower air
Roughly 320 km and 7-8 hours through Tibet's lushest, greenest country. From Ranwu you follow the Parlung Tsangpo past the Midui Glacier turnoff to forested Bomi (2,750 m), then climb over Sejila Pass (4,728 m), which on clear days reveals distant Namcha Barwa (7,782 m), before dropping into the meadow-and-pine 'little Switzerland' around Lulang and continuing to Nyingchi/Bayi (around 3,000 m). This is the lowest, most oxygen-rich stretch - a welcome recovery before Lhasa. Overnight in a comfortable 4-star hotel in Bayi/Nyingchi with good restaurants. Meals: Breakfast included.

Day 8: Nyingchi to Lhasa｜Mila Pass to the holy city
The final stretch, roughly 400 km and 6-7 hours on a fast modern expressway that has tamed this once-arduous road. Following the Niyang then the Lhasa River valley, the convoy crosses prayer-flag-draped Mila Pass (5,013 m) - the last great summit - before the land opens toward the broad Lhasa valley and the city itself (3,650 m). Arrival in Lhasa is the emotional climax of the journey. Time permitting, your guide introduces the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit and the sacred Jokhang Temple area on foot this evening. Transfer to your comfortable old-town hotel; the convoy adventure concludes here, with optional add-on Lhasa sightseeing easily arranged. Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included.
